The Elements & Principles of Design
A good design or Composition is the result of applying the Principles of Design to the Elements of Design in an Aesthetically pleasing way.
Composition: The way Elements of a Design are visually combined and the Principles are used to arrange or maniputlate them.
What are the Elements & Principles?
An Element of Design is a Component - It is a Design Building Block.
A Principle of Design is a Rule or Guideline you use to assemble and Organize the Elements.
By Applying the Principles to the Elements a great composition can be achieved.
Classification of the Elements & Principles: Although very similar, the way they are classified is not always the same depending upon the source; for our Tatting Designers Class we will use the Version in the Chart below:

A great Composition has an Overall:
Unity: solidarity; when all elements combine into a state of being a balanced, harmonious, complete whole.
Harmony: "a consistent, orderly, or pleasing arrangement of parts . . ."
Visual Impact: the way that elements of a design are visually combined and arranged; effective placement and divisions of space
Aesthetic: the idea of beauty at a given time and place
